Asbestos Surveys and Identification

Asbestos is the collective term used to describe a family of several types of naturally occurring mineral rock. There are six regulated types of asbestos, the three main types being:

  • Crocidolite (Blue)
  • Amosite (Brown)
  • Chrysotile (White)

  • All 3 types were widely used and imported into the UK. Crocidolite and Amosite were banned from use and export in 1985 with Chrysotile being banned in 1999.

Laboratory analysis is required to identify the different types of asbestos.

Properties of asbestos that make it so useful include:

  • Good thermal insulator
  • Stability at high temperatures
  • Good electrical insulation
  • High tensile strength
  • Long flexible fibres
  • Does not degrade over time
  • Chemically inert

  • Asbestos fibres have been incorporated into many materials especially building materials since the end of the 1800s

In the vast majority of cases only a fully trained and experienced asbestos surveyor will be able to identify all asbestos materials in a property.
